Brief Introduction of the Project
Water for Life Project is an exciting new joint initiative of Global Rivers Environmental Education Network Australia Inc (Oz GREEN) and Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for Young People United Kingdom (IAA). Quaid College is operational partner of the project. The project involves young people in assessing the health of the environment, developing their own vision and action plans and implementing eco-social projects they have designed.

The scope of water for life project can be tailored to meet the needs of different communities. The intention is that participation in the water for life project can be used by young people to suggest and implement solutions to their local problems while applying global knowledge and technologies. The project works with Governments, corporate sector, media and other international partners to protect and sustain our precious resources especially water.

Based on the methodology of engage, equip and enable, Water for Life Project is an innovative, measurable and transferable model. It has the potential to propel the youth into leadership positions about the problems faced by their communities. The project components include "My River Training" involving river snapshot, water testing, leadership vision, community survey, action planning and implementation of the plans.

In the second component is called "Youth Lead". Youth is provided with an opportunity to develop leadership skills, innovative thinking skills, negotiation skills and again development of action plans and implementation of their proposed solutions for the local problems. This involves rigorous leadership training, field work, community work and group dynamics. In all components of the project the community leaders and opinion builders are involved so do the Govt., corporate sector and the media.

"Water for Life Project" is currently in its pilot phase and is based at Quaid College Lahore. After the completion of pilot phase it can be replicated in whole country and other countries of International Award Association. The project is jointly monitored by Regional Office of the IAA based in Sydney and the Oz GREEN. The Project Coordinator based in Lahore-Pakistan is fully responsible for the smooth running of this project.

Brief Introduction of Partners of the Project
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Association is a well established self development program to young people worldwide (over 110 countries and territories). It operates through National Award Authorities and development organization with similar mandate. It equips the youth with lifer skills to make difference to themselves, their communities and the world at large.

Young people who participate in this program earn international award by achieving specific out comes in a number of categories including skill development, community services and residential projects.

Global Rivers Environmental Education Network Australia Inc is an award winning not for profit organization that has been running environmental education program in Australia and abroad for more than ten years. It works with educational institutions and young people to address the causes of environmental problems, define specific challenges, produce

Quaid College Lahore is a community based educational institution based on the philosophy of "sustainable development through human empowerment". It provides young leadership in the fields of economics, environmental studies, information technology and educational development. The college offers courses, seminars, training programs and degree courses on a variety of themes.

It works in collaboration with Local Government, State Govt., Federal Government, INGOs, corporate sector and other civic society organization working on sustainable development. Its ventures like "Young Leadership Development Project", "Green Teacher Initiative-II", "Faculty Development Program", Indus Computer Literacy Project" and "Environmental Education Project" are operated with the partnership of local and international organizations. "Water for Life Project" if funded by Western Foundation, United Kingdom, Oz Green is technical partner and Quaid College is operational partner.

As mentioned above the pilot phase of the project is underway where it in targeting to small segments of the community. Later this year the project may be replicated in different parts of country focusing on local environmental problems of different places.

Pilot Project Outline

Working of the Pilot Phase
Water for Life was taken as the core theme for the Regional Headline Project. The Water for Life Project was poised for one of the Award Program 11 member countries to pilot the project with the Regional Office and award-winning environmental education organization "The Oz GREEN" in a nominated country within the region.

The project proposes using Oz Green’s existing successful youth focused MY RiveR and Youth Lead programs. MY RiveR is about engaging, equipping and enabling youth and their communities to care for our rivers, our land, our future. The project can be used by young people for their Award Program community service or residential activity.

Objectives of MyRiveR Component

  • Build informed and active youth participation in sustaining the health of waterways by involving young people.

  • Build the capacity of youth to be active participants in community life.

    Main Components of the Project
  • Environmental Snapshot - taking the pulse of the river (young people/schools/communities undertaking a detailed health check of their locality (environmental assessments, water quality testing).

  • 2 Day Youth Congress - develop youth vision and action plans for the future of the river.

  • Youth-led Community Forum - to enable youth to present their findings, visions and action plans for how they will care for the waters in their locality.

  • Youth Plans Into Action - implement youth-led environmental initiatives within their local community.

  • Youth Leadership Training - 3 day Youth LEAD training and follow-up mentoring program for young people.

    Pilot Project Process
    The following process has been used for mapping & scoping and implementation of the "Water for Life Project".


    Stage 1 - Preparation and Risk Analysis
    • Written Nominations identifying potential local OAs per criteria (6 weeks)
    • IAA/Regional Advisory Board identify priority 1 onwards pilot NAAs from written nominations.
    • In-country visit by RD/OzGreen with NAA to conduct scoping/risk analysis/visit potential OAs. Develop project plan.
    • Consideration of scope/risk/plan and approval of selection of pilot NAA by IAA/RAB/OzGreen. If yes - go to 6. If no - reallocate budget and do 2nd scoping.
    • Project Coordinator job description agreed and selection - local in country based (selection RD/OzGreen/pilot NAA).
    Stage 2 - Recruitment of the Project
    • Recruitment of local pilot OAs.
    • Initial training of Project Coordinator by OzGreen (optional training for pilot NAA and pilot OAs).
    • OAs recruits participants.
